Caleb Gray-Burriss Ends Up in the Slammer for Stealing Union Members’ Pensions, Among Other Things | Big Labor Bailout

by WFI Staff

At one time, Caleb Gray-Burriss thought he was a pretty special guy.  He was the founder and then became the president of a first-of-its-kind National Association of Special Police Security Officers(NASPSO).  And with well over a million security guards in the United States, according to the U.S.Department of Labor, no one could tell Gray-Burriss there wasn’t a need for that kind of organization.  Based in Washington, D.C., Gray-Burriss fashioned himself as the newest leader in the Big Labor cause as he supposedly created the organization to represent security officers guarding federal buildings.

Gray-Burriss smelled an opportunity with all the excitement of Winnie the Pooh in a honey pot.  To Gray-Burriss, one million security guards meant more money in his pocket, vis-à-vis fat checks from member dues and their pension plans.  So bad was the extent of Gray-Burriss’ scheme to use NASPSO as his very own personal ATM machine, that watchdogs created a whistle-blowing website exclusively devoted to him called EyeonCaleb.org.  It’s the misadventures of a scheming labor boss as he steals hundreds of thousands of dollars from the union he created.

How did it all end up?

“[S]entenced to 76 months in prison followed by 36 months of supervised probation.  Gray-Burriss was also ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and to pay restitution to the union of $252,376.42.  On December 4, 2012, Gray-Burriss was found guilty by a jury following a trial on 18 counts, including six counts of mail fraud for theft from the union’s pension plan, six counts of embezzlement from a labor organization, one count of conspiracy to embezzle union funds, one count of criminal contempt, one count of tampering with a witness by corrupt persuasion, one count of failure to file LM reports, one count of filing false LM reports, and one count of failing to maintain union records.”
