Today, Americans awoke to the news that an iconic American company will close its doors – costing 18,000 workers their jobs after thousands went on strike. Labor bosses within the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) organized the protests.
Hostess CEO Gregory F. Rayburn released a statement noting: “We deeply regret the necessity of today’s decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike. Hostess Brands will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,500-member workforce and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders.”
Hostess is the maker of numerous well-known and beloved products including Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread.
The BCTGM is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). The AFL-CIO’s boss is Richard Trumka. Earlier this year Trumka boasted: “I’m at the White House a couple times a week – two or three times a week.”
The Workforce Fairness Institute today is issuing a petition on the White House web site which reads:
Ban Big Labor Boss Richard Trumka from the W.H. for destroying great companies like Hostess and killing 18,000+ jobs!
The Hostess company has been forced to shut its doors because of an employee strike that crippled its operations. With Hostess closing, over 18,000 people will be out of work.
Big Labor Boss Richard Trumka heads up the union responsible for this. Trumka boasts he visits the White House two to three times a week. Shouldn’t he be protecting his members instead?
Now, more than 18,000 people will be out of work as Hostess Brands is forced to liquidate due to a prolonged strike by union workers.
It’s time to ban Richard Trumka from the White House until he starts protecting workers, and stops playing politics.
